Deleting Installed POIs

I have a Garmin RV760 LMT. When I downloaded and installed the POI file from Passport America RV parks,I managed to get it onto my GPS twice. Can anybody tell me how to delete one of the files?
Thanks

POI Folder

I'm not familiar with the RV760 but this applies to most Nuvi's.

Connect you GPS tp your computer, then look for your POI folder. the POI folder may be either in the Garmin\POI folder or in the root directory of the Nuvi.

Your POI files are in that folder, Make a backup of both on your hard drive just in case, then delete one of them.

Deleting installed POIs

Muell9k,
Thanks much,that worked!
Also, when I originaly downloaded the POI's I kept a copy on my computer hard drive,so I was not worried about
loosing them

All good

All good. All's well that ends well

It is weird

how the Nuvi's will allow you to load two copies. It can be annoying. But doing what you did to fix it is the best way.

It all depends on how you named them.

Recently I updated all of my POI files.
I discovered that the POI files DO Not need to reside in the POI folder to be recognized.
I accidentally copied one that I didn't want into the Text folder.
After deleting all POI'd in the POI folder the POI still appeared, I was confused.

The way I found it was by doing a Windows search and entered the keyword of ".gpi" which brought me to the text folder where it was. Once I deleted from there it no longer appeared.

Lesson learned, if a POI can't be deleted it may be residing in another location. To find it you can do a search in Windows using the keyword of .gpi.

I did not believe it

@muell9k - when I read this post, I must admit I did not believe what you said.

I have some .gpi files on my computer that are a result of dealing with some members claim that a POI file is corrupt, or something like that. I would get the file; load it to see if I could; and, then just MOVE the file from my nuvi to a computer folder called @@poigpi in case I needed a follow up.

Indeed, I tried what you said on my 765 (moved a .gpi file into the "Text" folder) and it was not found in Custom POIs - so I thought I had caught you in an error. But, when I tried the same thing on a 2455, lo and behold, the .gpi file was picked up.

SO - at some point in time, Garmins must have started looking for .gpi files anywhere on the unit.

What I wonder is when this "feature" came into existance?

If anyone is willing to take the time to do some quick experiments, I would appreciate knowing which units react this way.

As you know, POI Loader has the option to save files to your computer. You could get a POI file from poi-factory that is new to you and download it. Then let POI Loader put it on your computer. Then, copy the POI file from your computer into the Text folder on your unit and report whether the unit recognizes it.

Feature exists already on 260

This feature exists already on my old 260.

Good information here.

I was surprised to hear your 765 didn't recognize the custom poi file.

I did another experiment on my 660. As we know the 660 is a very old unit and the firmware hasn't been updated in a very long time. Your 765 is newer and has newer firmware.

I copied the POI file into the 660's Jpeg folder and it was recognized in Custom POI's. I then moved it from the Jpeg folder into the MP3 folder, here again it was recognized.

I used two different csv POI's for the experiment, one had an alert sound attached to it, the other did not, they both had .bmp icons. They both appeared were recognized on the 660 if put either in the Jpeg folder or the MP3 folder.
The original discovery I made was on my 2460 when I put it in the text folder.

I find it quite odd the 660 recognized them and your 765 could not. I don't know the answer.

No, for 755T and 855

I tried this for both my 755T and 855 and neither of them recognized the .gpi file when it was in the Text folder. The 855 did not even have a Text folder until I created one. The 755T did, but the outcome was the same ... no custom POI's unless they are in the \Garmin\POI folder.

More info

Ok, we have determined that some (maybe most) Garmins would recognize a .gpi file in any folder as a Custom POI.

Now - a question arises as to whether POI Loader would delete these .gpi files in other than the POI folder.

I tried this on the 2455 and it did not delete the .gpi file in the Text folder.

An interesting tidbit is that before trying to delete .gpi files, I renamed the one .gpi file in the POI folder to .gpix. When I ran POI Loader with the .gpix file in place, POI Loader said that
"There was an unexpected error during the removal of the custom POI file."

Once I renamed the .gpix back to .gpi and ran POI Loader, it deleted it.

Those of you who are willing, try a couple of deletes and let us know your results.
