Install speech recognition on your 720

Not all 720's were originally delivered with the core of the speech recognition included or not. Mine certainly was. However, in the US and Canada, none of them were "activated".

In order to activate yours, you will want to connect your 720 to your computer, and respond "Yes" to your 720 when asked if you want a computer connection.

As for TomTom Home, if it comes up, you can just shut it down. It plays no part at all in this process.

You will find that your 720 is recognized as though it were some kind of external USB hard drive (like a "thumb drive", if you know what those are), or as many digital cameras are today (except the devil Sony, going its own way as always).

So you can click on "My Computer", and behold, you'll see your 720 there looking like a hard drive that can be opened.

Click on it. One of the folders you see should be called "ASR" (Auto Speech Recognition). Click on that. It should have a fair number of files in it that start with "acmod3200". If so, you're good to go. If not, you should first assure that the *current* level of software is loaded on your 720. Docking it and letting TomTom Home do its magic will take care of that. I don't know how far before firmware version 7.221 the folks at TT may have incorporated the ASR pieces.

Assuming you are up to date on your firmware, you just need to add one tiny file that contains JUST the number "1" to cause all of that software to work. The file you need is called "support_asr.dat". Once that file is placed in the "ASR" folder, you're done.

The way most people have created this file is to open Notepad, hit the "1" key exactly once (don't even hit "Enter") and save that file to the filename mentioned above. If the name gets a little munged (get's a .txt stuck on the end) by Notepad, just rename it to the name shown.

This system won't allow *.dat files to be attached, but I'm going to attach mine here as a *.doc file (it will have to be renamed from "support_asr.doc" to "support_asr.dat" after it is downloaded). Click on it, save it to your hard drive, rename it, and slide it over into that "ASR" folder, and have fun!

The ASR software handles some basic information for providing destinations, etc., and can be used for speaking town names, street names, and street numbers. I've even told it "NO" in English when it asks if I want to reroute based upon traffic conditions. The instructions should have been in your manual, since the 720/920 seem to share a lot of the same manual information.

Thanks for the info on the 720, omnitek. I hope Miss POI adds this to the TomTom faq page! smile

Mike,
I have linked this to the Tom Tom FAQ area, thanks for asking for it.

Thanks!

Wow, now that is just too easy. I don't know how you figured it out. Thanks again for the good work.

Works like charm.

Thanks, works great.

Speech Recognition on Go 720

I have added the file, and when I select Navigate To I see the icons but when I select I have no speech recognition. Have I missed something

Speech

I'm assuming you have the 720 with version 7.221 and the 710.1584 maps.
It wont work otherwise.
If so remove the file and start over again.
let me know.

Install speech recognition on your 720

I have map version 705.1481, I have gone to download maps and I am told I have the current version. I am now loading the most current version. If I have any more issues I will let you know.

Thanks

speech

Thats why it didnt work
710.1584 is the current,Just waiting for 715 version anyday now
Keep the "support_asr.dat" file and transfer it over when your ready.

speech recognition on your 720

Got my new GO 720 today (product number on box is 8M00.780.7.01.) I came across this post for SR. I have both the current versions of firmware and map loaded. I created the dat file and placed it in the ASR folder as directed, rebooted and not working. The only Icon I have is a microphone for recording your own voice. Nothing like shown in the manual for ASR. Any suggestions or am I missing a step.

Speech

Check your device to see what version was installed.
You might of gotten a 720 with a older version.
If so go to Tomtom home and update
Make sure you have the 720 with version 7.221 and the 710.1584 maps.
It wont work otherwise.

let me know.

SR 720

I checked and I had all the current files. So I deleted the new file and started over. It works now! The difference this time around was when I first created the file I saved it to the desktop first, then "copied" it to the ASR folder. This time around I still saved it to the desktop but "moved" the file to the folder and it works now. Don't know why this would affect the file but apparently it does. Maybe looses something in the code? I decided to retry it with success! Thanks!

Speech

Glad it worked out
Enjoy!

Speech Recognition on the 720

Your instructions worked flawlessly-I now have speech recognition on my 720. I do have one question, however. Since it is necessary to update the maps to build number v710.1584, that file uses up about 1.7 GB of memory, and the internal memory on the Go 720 is only 2GB total. I tried selecting my installed 2 GB SD card so the maps would install on it instead, but it comes up with a message that says something like (not exactly) "maps not available for this device". I went ahead and installed it to the internal memory of the GO, and it is working well, but I now only have about 80MB left of internal memory.
QUESTION 1: Is there a way to install the maps on the SD card instead? I am concerned that the device could become unstable with only 80MB of its 2GB internal memory available. QUESTION 2: Is there a way to uninstall some of the human voices from my internal memory to free up some additional space? I did not see that option in the "Remove Items from my Go" screen

Speech Recognition on the 720-Can you update maps into SD card?

Speech

On tomtom home go to select device and
select external memory instead of internal, then go to latest map guarantee and download the new map.
You can download it again! to the sd card.Make sure its empty.
Then go to your change maps on your unit and give it a try.
Please before you do anything back up your device using tomtom home backup feature. Also copy and paste the voices onto your card and and give that a try.
Remember only computer voices give street names.
Good Luck let me know

Loading Map v710.1584 onto SD Card

THANK-YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TIMELY RESPONSE!

The first time I tried to load Map v710.1584 to the device (using "Latest Map Guarantee"), I actually selected the external (SD Card) to put it on, but it came up with a message that said somethng like "Latest Map Guarantee is not available for this device." When I tried again selecting internal memory, it worked fine. For some reason, it does not recognize the SD card as a viable device for installing maps. I have added other items to the SD card through Tom Tom Home, with no problems at all. Thus far, the only thing that I have NOT been able to load to the card was the v710.1584 maps.
If I can succeed on another attempt to download the v710.1584 to the SD card, how do I REMOVE them from the internal memory to get my space back?
As for the voices, my intention was to remove all human voices to save space as well, as I rely heavily on the "text to speech" feature.

Transfer Maps

Maybe do a backup of your device, then copy and paste your NA maps onto your Sd card. Then try using changing the map preference to the sd card. Give that a try.
Assuming this works. You can remove Items via your TomTom home.
The voice files are in a folder called Voice . they end with chk. The Computer voices are in a file called
LoquendoTTS. Paste Computer voices in that file.
good luck

Firmware & Voice Recongition

I just purchased my TomTom 720 a couple weeks ago. Came with Map 7.05 and just yesterday I was able to update my map to 7.15 through tomtom home software.

Anyhow, it's at firmware 7.480 now and from what I have read it's needs to be at firmware 7.221 to enable voice recongition. Is that correct ???

If so, is there anyway to roll back my firmware to 7.221 and keep map version 7.15 to enable this feature ?

Just curious if anybody has any thoughts or ideas on this.

Thanks

Speech Recognition on 720 with 7.15 map

This is a non invasive procedure.
All your doing is adding a file with the #1 in it.
Give it a try. It can't hurt, If it doesn't work just remove the file and wait for a new fix.
I'm sure it won;t be long.
Let me know if it works, Good luck

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply omnitek,

Yes I have created the the .dat file in put it the asr folder. Does not do anything. Doesn't even show the voice recongition buttons on the display screen.

Hmmmmm. Not a real big deal, just would be nice to enable it if at all possible.

Thanks

voice recongition

Thank thats good to know, I guess I'll stick to my 7.10 maps until I find a fix.

Hi omnitek,Just checking in

Hi omnitek,

Just checking in & give you an update. I can verify that the v7.15 North America Map with the Navcor firmware 7.221 will work with voice recongition asr patch.
It's the latest navcor firmware 7.480 update that disables the funtion with the asr patch and causes the problem.

Voice recongition on new 7.480 update

Go to your old back up files (7.21 version) and copy the asr file (make sure the support file is there) then go to your device files and delete the new ASR file. Then paste the old 7.21 one into your device. Turn off your device and start it up again , Voila , theres your voice

Voice recongition on new 7.480 update

I wish I had read this forum before I set up my new 720 last night, and followed the instructions to download the new software to the unit. I have 7.480, but I cannot find the speech files mentioned. I did back up the unit before I updated. Hopefully they can be reccovered when I get home.

Out of ignorance, one thing that I know I did not back up was voices. You had to check that box, and I did not. Does this mean I won't be able to get the speech files back?

If I can't get them back, is there a way to download the 221 firmware and install it on the 720 and start over again.

Many thanks in advance.

I did backup , but...

Ok. I checked my backup files, and it appears that my original software was 7.480. The only update that I have downloaded is Home 2, a Guam map update, and a GPS fix update.

None of he speech recognition files are in my current or backup asr folder, and I therefore believe I never had them.

I do need to update my North American Map from the one that shipped, 705.1481 to the current 7.15, but, from what I have read, the speech recognition files do not come from the map update. If that is correct, then it appears that TomTom has quietly removed the speech recognition capability from the 720

Here guys , a website were you can get the 7.21

http://www.oldboy.me.uk/TomTomUpdates/index.html

Go there , open the asr file and copy it. Then remove the new 7.48 /ASR folder. Then paste the old 7.21/ ASR folder in its place.
Please let me know

Just want to be sure that I understand your procedure, omnitek. There is no asr file or folder inside the zip file found on oldboy's site. An external process is going to have to access the archives to install this. Do you backup the 7.48, install the 7.21 to get the correct folder, backup the 7.21 asr folder, reinstall 7.48, and then replace its asr folder with the 7.21? I'm new at this and don't want to mess anything up. Thanks.

I checked the Oldboys download and yes there is a ASR file.
Do not remove the 7.48 update! All you have to do is remove the ASR file (only) from 7.48 and replace it with the one from oldboys (Version 7.21).
Now don forget to create the support file, and pop it in that folder before replacing the ASR FILE
HERES HOW TO MAKE THAT SUPPORT FILE:

Go to my computer and you will find that your 720 is recognized as though it were some kind of external USB hard drive (like a "thumb drive",

Click on it, save it to your hard drive, rename it, and slide it over into that "ASR" folder, and have fun!

Speech Recognition

Thanks-I don't know how I missed the ASR folder when I looked at the file before. When you refer to the ASR file are you speaking of a single file or the folder that contains the acmod*** and *.CTX files? Thanks for your patience-I do appreciate it.

Map 710.1584 for TomTom 720

Can anyone tell me where they found this map 710.1584? I have looked everywhere I can think, including the one you can buy in TomTom Home, for about $100. No luck.

TomTom 720 firmware update

I tried to replace the ASR folder with what was on the UK website that you've shown above, it always shows me as having newer firmware, so it doesn't show the "updated" one, the 7.480 is what I have. I downloaded all of those maps, which starting with the 5th one, it says on that website that it's 94mb, but in fact it shows 34 kb, and 6-14 are about 18-19 kb. How do I replace the maps that I've downloaded? How can it show the new firmware when you only update the ASR folder (with the files you have shown me to download?

Firmware

Do not replace the firmware! Just extract the ASR folder from the 7.21 firmware and replace it on the 7.48 firmware. As far as the maps go, your present NA maps should be backed up, just in case. then remove them and then all the new downloaded maps should be put in one folder then put into your device.

give that a try
Remember backup your device before you do anything!

Firmware update

Something else I tried once
Get a empty 2GB SD card. Change your TT home settings the the UK Site. Then change your device settings to work from the external memory(top left hand corner drop down menu {device}).Then go the latest map guarentee and it will offer you to download a new NA map, go for it if it works.

omnitek...which country did you register with TT as?

Are you a registered UK or NA user? I'm a NA user, and I'm wondering if this will work for me.

thanks.

Maps

I'm a NA in Canada registered user. I just tried switching over to the UK site and it actually worked.
It downloaded it to the SD card then you copy it over to the device using one of several methods.

Speech Recognition in New Zealand

I have a Tomtom Go 720. The speech recognition is not activated here in NZ at all although there is an ASR folder full of files, including the acmod*.*. The icons do not even appear. But by downloading & installing the UK ASR folder I now have the icons but they are greyed out! Shame. My map is 'New Zealand' v711.1692 and application is 7.480(other than the altered ASR folder). Where to from here? Any ideas?

I heard there is a new firmware coming out , you will have to wait and see

715 Maps

Omnitek, do the maps go into the ASR folder? As far as I can tell, the ASR folder is the only on that has *.dat files. Also, when attempting to "unzip" them using WinRAR, it said the first file is corrupt, and that would mean that basically all the rest of them are worthless. Is there another location where it can be downloaded?

ASR Folder

The ASR files belong to the firmware.
The map files are by them self.
I just checked that site and the ASR files are good

New Solution

The new firmware is out 7.481
Just update as you would normally, then create Your Asr support file and throw it in the asr folder.)
(see above post on how to create ASR support DAT file)

Map files

Thanks for the assistance, but I talked to TomTom about my map situation, and they said because I was within 30 days, and because I'd been using "Latest Map guarantee" that all I would have to do is submit my receipt from Best Buy to them, and they would let me have the US map 715, for free, instead of the $99.99 they are asking for otherwise. So with that in mind, using your comments for your first post, having the new firmware as 7.481, which mine is... will allow me to have voice recognition on my TomTom? Thanks for your assistance on this. grin

TomTom maps

Omnitek, thanks for your help, but after having the 715 maps, and the little trick you talked about, it worked. Thanks for all of everyone's help.

New Solution Working?

I have tried the instructions for the 7.481 firmware version and have been unsucessful. My map version is 720.1803. I have tried creating the file directly on the device after deleting the original, creating it then copying over the existing and no luck. The options did show up, but were greyed out and now they are gone all together. What am I missing? Do I need to drop my map version to 715? thanks!
