POI and Storage

I'm having problems loading my custom POIs. Storage was an issue so I put in a 4 gig SD. It works but when I hook the NUVI 1490 up to my computer and look at storage available, it is only showing 2 gigs usuable. Any ideas what is going on?

Is your map on the MicroSD?

Is your map on the MicroSD? That would explain why you only have 2GB available on a 4GB card.

No map

He did not mention that he have any map on the sd card.

So the card must be a blank one.

He only wrote that he use a 4GB card and only show 2 GB.

SD Card Shows 2GB Free

I agree with Strephon_Alkhalikoi that the map is on the SD card, thus only showing 2GB available.
He may not have mentioned the map is on the SD card, but he did say " Storage was an issue" maybe he is not aware on his last map download there was not enough room on the 1490 and it was loaded on the SD card.

Missing 2 GB

My last map update was stored in a file folder named ".System". If you look at the file directory without changing the hidden system file option on your PC, all that memory used by the map looks like it is missing. That could be his problem.

Other Drive letter

When you have a microSD card, it should show up as another drive letter.

When you plug in your GPS with a card installed, it should show up as 2 separate drive letters; 1 for the GPS, the other for the card.

Sd card size

what is the larger GB SD card you can put on a 1490 ? and still show you the sd full size.

I just purchase and 8GB Sd card at wallmart for $12.00 I used on my 1450 and it show me all 8GB.

Very happy with it.

I use 16GB

Does your 1490 nag you on boot-up to save POI to the unit?

Update

SD Card was a 4gb card and being designated by a new drive letter, it showed only 2 gig total usable space. Something like 1.8 used. I purchased a Sandisk Micro SDHC 8 gig card and installed it. I then copied the files I backed up from the 4gb to it, and it is showing almost 8 gigs usable space with a little less than 2 gigs used. Wierd but apparently the card was bad.

Thanks for advising it was the card itself.
I always recommend using Sandisk SD cards, as they say, you get what you pay for. Just be careful if buying Sandisk on Ebay, many are counterfeit.
Whenever I buy one I always go to the Sandisk site and register it for the warranty. If it's counterfeit it won't validate the warranty. You must enter the serial #, I have to use a strong magnifying glass on the micro sd cards to see the serial #.

common complaint about cards people bought on eBay

Where did you buy the 4gb card?

This is a common complaint about cheap cards people bought on eBay or some other online sources. The fact it that knockoff cards are being sold that do not physically have the memory that they show on the markings.

Agreed. The worst of the counterfeit or defective Sandisk cards are ultracheap and being sold by Asian eBay Sellers--and the eBay Buyer Protection plan usually won't be worth the effort with Asian sellers...I speak from experience. Amazon is good for Sandisk if the seller is Amazon itself--to be safe, avoid the businesses selling on Amazon for SD cards, so you really need to check who the Seller is. The good(?) news is that genuine Sandisks are quite available at places like Wal-Mart (check the camera or cell phone area of the store).
